Bernard Tomic set a second-round meeting with second seed Andy Murray at the Sony Open Tennis after edging qualifier Marc Gicquel 7-5, 7-6(3) on Thursday afternoon. The 20-year-old Australian overcame a break deficit in the first set to prevail against the Frenchman in 83 minutes.

Jarkko Nieminen rallied past David Nalbandian 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Nieminen had lost five of his past six meetings with the Argentine, but claimed victory in one hour and 49 minutes to improve to 5-8 against Nalbandian. The Finn has won both of their encounters in Miami, adding to his third-round win in 2007.

Viktor Troicki handed Pablo Andujar his sixth opening-round exit of the season after defeating the Spaniard 6-2, 6-3. Troicki will face off against sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for a place in the third round.

A pair of Americans fell in their openers. Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei eased past qualifier Robby Ginepri and Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo beat wild card Rhyne Williams 6-2, 6-4.

Alejandro Falla, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Olivier Rochus and Guillaume Rufin were also victorious in first-round action.
