by ATP Staff|
Top seed Stanislas Wawrinka, who is competing at the Grand Prix Hassan II for the first time since his 2010 title run, advanced to the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Wawrinka, now 5-0 lifetime in Casablanca, knocked out Blaz Kavcic 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 and will next play Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who required two hours and 52 minutes to beat Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-2. Wawrinka and Garcia-Lopez are 2-2 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.
Fourth seed Benoit Paire advanced to the quarter-finals for the second straight year after he hit 11 aces past Aljaz Beden for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory in just over two hours. He will next meet 2001 runner-up Tommy Robredo, who capitalised on four of his 13 break points to defeat Tobias Kamke 6-4, 7-5.
Earlier in the day, seventh seed Robin Haase battled past this season’s Chennai runner-up Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in two hours and 20 minutes. In the second round, Haase will play Kenny de Schepper, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Steve Darcis. The pair has never met before.
“I am trying to play better and better,” Haase told ATPWorldTour.com. “I have started working with a new coach and already, I feel I am improving. But you cannot change dramatically, after 15 years of playing. I made a good start here by winning my first-round match. Of course, I need to raise my level if I want to keep on winning.”
Knowle/Polasek Advance To Doubles QFs
In doubles action, top seeds Julian Knowle and Filip Polasek scraped past Martin Emmrich and Rameez Junaid 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 12-10. Each team broke serve five times.
