TUESDAY PREVIEW – TOP 10 FOURSOME DEL POTRO, TSONGA, GASQUET, TIPSAREVIC IN ACTION

• Second round play begins and first round concludes on Monday at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters with No. 5 seed Juan Martin del Porto, No. 6 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, No. 7 seed Richard Gasquet and No. 8 seed Janko Tipsarevic in second round action on Court Central. All together there are 16 matches on the schedule with five second round and 11 first round matches.

• First up is a second round meeting between No. 8 seed Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia and Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria (Tipsarevic leads 3-0, first meeting on clay). The World No. 10 Tipsarevic is playing his first clay match of the year and has a 9-6 overall record. Tipsarevic opened the season by capturing his fourth career title at Chennai but since then is 5-6, falling in  opening matches at Marseille, Dubai and ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Indian Wells. The 21-year-old Dimitrov is one of seven players 23-younger to in the Top 50 Emirates ATP Rankings. He reached his first ATP World Tour final in Brisbane (l. to Murray) in the opening week of the year.

• In the next match on is a second round meeting and repeat of the 2013 Montpellier final between French countrymen Benoit Paire and No. 7 seed Richard Gasquet, who won that match 62 63, converting five of 12 break point opportunities. It was his second title of the year. The 26-year-old Gasquet is off to best start of his career with a 21-5 record. He is one of four players with 20 or more wins this year; joined by David Ferrer (25-4), Novak Djokovic (21-2) and Tomas Berdych (21-6). The 23-year-old Paire won his first main draw here Monday and he and comes in with an 11-10 (2-2 on clay) record this season. He is looking for his first win over a Top 10 opponent (0-8). 

• In the third match on, No. 6 seed and top Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga meets Russian Nikolay Davydenko for the fifth time but first on clay (series tied 2-2, all on indoor hard courts). The World No. 8 Tsonga comes in with a 16-5 (2-0 on clay) match record on the season and he earned his 10th career ATP World Tour title in Marseille in Febru. The former World No. 3 Davydenko is making his ninth appearance here with an 11-8 record ,with his best result the semi-finals in 2008 (l. to Nadal). He is looking for his third win over a Top opponent this year (2-3, 38-72 career mark). He opened the season with a runner-up in Doha, losing to another Frenchman, Gasquet.

• In the last match of the day is the fourth time meeting between Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov and No. 5 seed Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro (del Potro leads 3-0 and has not dropped a set). The 24-year-old and top Ukrainian Dolgopolov comes in with a 9-6 (1-0 on clay) record on the season, highlighted by reaching the quarter-finals at Brisbane and Memphis. He is playing his first Top 10 opponent of the year and his career mark is 3-20 aginastnst Top 10 foes. The Tandil native del Porto is playing here for the second time. The last time he played here was in 2009 and he lost in three sets in the second round to Ivan Ljubicic. He comes in with a 16-5 mark and reached his second career ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final at Indian Wells (d. Djokovic in SF, l. to Nadal in F) last month.

• On Court des Prince, there are four matches, leading off with Aussie Marinko Matosevic vs. ’10 runner-up Fernando Verdasco, followed by No. 16 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber vs. qualifier Pablo Andujar. In the final two matches, wild card Gael Monfils meets qualifier Albert Montanes, and Ernests Gulbis takes on big-serving American John Isner.
