Nikolay Davydenko will look to notch his 10th win in 12 meetings against Tomas Berdych when he faces the third-seeded Czech in the second round of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. Berdych has won two of their past three matches.
The 31-year-old Davydenko opened with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over 20-year-old Spanish wild card Roberto Carballes Baena, the youngest player in this year’s draw. The two-time Barcelona semi-finalist countered losing his serve three times by converting six of his 12 break points.
Gulbis beat Radek Stepanek 7-6(4), 6-2 and next meets Fernando Verdasco, whom he lost to in the quarter-finals of the Spaniard's 2010 title run. Tursunov will confront top seed and four-time finalist David Ferrer for the first time after defeating Denis Istomin 6-3, 6-4.
Two Spanish wild cards won their opening matches. Pablo Carreno-Busta edged Dutchman Robin Haase 6-1, 2-6, 7-6(5) for his second tour-level victory, while Albert Montanes defeated Ricardas Berankis 6-4, 6-3.
Elsewhere, Ivan Dodig saved five of seven break points to beat Aljaz Bedene 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and 18 minutes. Andrey Kuznetsov required just 46 minutes to beat Igor Sijsling 6-1, 6-3 in the first round. Paolo Lorenzi won 80 per cent of his first service points to beat Guillaume Rufin 6-4, 6-2 in 76 minutes.
