Barcelona, Spain

Berdych© Manuel Queimadelos/Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell Tomas Berdych has now beaten Nikolay Davydenko in three of their past four FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings.

Carlos Berlocq will challenge second seed and seven-time champion Rafael Nadal in the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell second round on Wednesday after he beat Daniel Gimeno-Traver 7-5, 6-4 in one hour and 40 minutes. In their only FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting, Berlocq lost to Nadal in three sets in the Brasil Open 2013 quarter-finals in Sao Paulo.

Tomas Berdych was forced to work for his spot in the third round on Tuesday. The third-seeded Czech, who is competing at the ATP World Tour 500 clay-court tournament for the fourth time, saved one match point at 4-5 in the second set to beat former World No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. It was the third time this season that Berdych won a match after saving match point.

Berdych improved to a 3-9 FedEx ATP Head 2 Head record against two-time semi-finalist Davydenko, and to a 23-7 match record on the season – fourth best overall on the ATP World Tour. He will next play either 14th seed Grigor Dimitrov or Tommy Robredo, the 2004 titlist.

Bernard Tomic defeated qualifier Kenny de Schepper 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to set up a clash against seventh seed Juan Monaco. Qualifier Ernests Gulbis overcame No. 12 seed and 2010 champion Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-4 in 85 minutes, losing just six of his first service points and saving all three break points he faced.

Sixth seed Kei Nishikori of Japan made a winning start to his clay-court campaign, capitalising on his four break point chances to defeat Spaniard qualifier Guillermo Olaso 6-1, 6-3.
