MUTUA MADRID OPEN 2013
Janowicz Sets Berdych Showdown; Isner Tops Qualifier
by ATP Staff|
In a first-time meeting, the 24th-ranked Janowicz defeated 18th-ranked Sam Querrey 6-3, 6-4, breaking the American once in each set to wrap up his first tour-level win on clay in 68 minutes. Janowicz notched his 10th tour-level win of the season and will look to avenge his loss to World No. 6 Berdych in Marseille earlier this year. The Czech will be seeking his 400th career match win.
Querrey’s compatriot John Isner fared better, edging qualifier Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 7-5, 7-6(8). Isner hit 13 aces and won 83 per cent of his service points to seal the victory in one hour and 42 minutes. He improved to 13-9 on the year and will play Pablo Andujar next.
The 28-year-old American is contesting the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Madrid for the fourth straight year. His best showing came on his debut in 2010 when he reached the third round (l to Nadal). Isner won his first tour-level title on clay last month in Houston (d. Almagro).

Qualifier Robin Haase overcame Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-2 in one hour and 57 minutes. Haase saved all seven break points he faced to move ahead 2-1 in the pair’s FedEx ATP Head2Head series. In the second round, Haase will face seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Home favourite Nicolas Almagro also advanced in first-round action. Almagro won the first set 6-4 against Tobias Kamke before the German qualifier retired from their match with right hip pain. Almagro is coming off a runner-up finish to Rafael Nadal in Barcelona.
In the final match of the day, Grigor Dimitrov set a second-round clash with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. The Bulgarian dismissed wild card Javier Marti 6-2, 6-4, capitalising on three of his five break point chances. Djokovic has won their two previous meetings in straight sets, which includes a third-round encounter at Indian Wells in March.
