Sixth seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna reached their first ATP World Tour final of the season on Saturday as they defeated Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky 6-3, 7-6(3) at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome.
Bhupathi and Bopanna needed 72 minutes to advance, hitting 12 aces and breaking their Mexican/American opponents once. The 38-year-old Bhupathi is bidding to lift the trophy at the Foro Italico for the third time, having triumphed on his 1998 debut (w/ Leander Paes) and later in 2004 (w/ Max Mirnyi).
The Indians previously titled in 2012 at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships (d. Fyrstenberg/Matkowski) and the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris (d. Qureshi/Rojer). Bhupathi and Bopanna will look to add to their team trophy haul when they face top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in Sunday’s final.
The Bryans topped fifth seeds Max Mirnyi and Horia Tecau 6-4, 6-7(2), 10-3 in 84 minutes to move through to their fourth straight final. The American twins have captured five crowns in 2013, including a record-breaking 13th major team title at the Australian Open (d. Haase/Sijsling). They are coming off a triumph at the Mutua Madrid Open (d. Peya/Soares) and are looking to claim their third title in Rome (2008, 2010).
