Simon, Querrey Win Nice Openers; Isner Upset

Second-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon set a quarter-final meeting with recent Madrid semi-finalist Pablo Andujar at the Open de Nice Côte d'Azur after defeating qualifier Guillaume Rufin 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday. The 17th-ranked Simon will be looking to reach the semi-finals for the second straight year in Nice.

Andujar, who has risen 60 spots to No. 53 in the Emirates ATP Rankings in two weeks after reaching his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 semi-final, dismissed Yen-Hsun Lu 6-2, 6-0. 

Third seed Sam Querrey will play French wild card Edouard Roger-Vasselin for the first time. Querrey recorded his first clay-court match win of the year with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky in 84 minutes on Wednesday. Roger-Vasselin beat Ricardas Berankis 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Fourth seed John Isner, who captured his first clay-court title at the US Men's Clay Court Championship in Houston (d. Almagro) last month, hit 14 aces and broke serve four times but could not beat Robin Haase in a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 loss over one hour and 55 minutes.

Albert Montanes improved to 3-5 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against Victor Hanescu after he saved six of seven break points in a 7-5, 7-6(2) win.

Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu notched his second tour-level win of the season, prevailing against Argentine Carlos Berlocq 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and 12 minutes.   

Gael Monfils became the fourth Frenchman to reach the quarter-finals after closing out a 6-2, 7-6(5) victory over sixth seed Fabio Fognini of Italy in the final match of the day.

Top Seeds Upset In QFs
Frenchmen Nicolas Mahut and Roger-Vasselin recovered from a slow start to beat top seeds Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer 3-6, 7-5, 10-3 for a place in the doubles semi-finals. Qureshi and Rojer won their biggest title at the Sony Open Tennis in March. Mahut and Roger-Vasselin go onto face Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah, who ousted third seeds Eric Butorac and Lukas Dlouhy 6-2, 3-6, 10-6.
