Almagro, Lopez, Monaco, Verdasco Bring Touch Of Class To Esquire
by ATP Staff|
Argentine Juan Monaco and a trio of Spaniards, Nicolas Almagro, Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco, bring a touch of class to Esquire Latinoamerica’s June issue for a Great Gatsby-themed spread titled ‘The Sport of Glamour’.
“The guys were styled very vintage, and we had each of them doing something very reminiscent of gentlemen things to do,” said John Russo, who photographed the players this past March at the Rancho Mirage estate of BNP Paribas Open owner Larry Ellison.
“We were playing pool, we were playing poker, we had something like writing in a journal and then we had another gentleman playing chess, so we tried to tie it all in. They really brought a lot to the shoot.”
The magazine dedicates four pages to each player, with images of them in their designer threads complemented by Q&As on their first tennis memories, biggest dreams, favourite tournaments and more.

“You can show the people that we’re not just tennis players. We have another life beside the court,” Monaco told ATP World Tour Uncovered during the photo shoot.
Russo, whose portfolio includes the likes of Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and John Travolta, relished the opportunity to photograph the ATP World Tour stars for Esquire. “It was great working with the guys. I was so excited to meet them,” he said. “Even though I get to shoot Brad Pitt and all these big actors, I’m so into tennis. That was like hitting the lottery.”
