by ATP Staff|
Berdych, who finished runner-up in 2005 (l. to Nadal) and 2008 (l. to Robredo), recorded his 10th match win on his fifth appearance in Båstad. He has now reached the quarter-finals or better in 11 of his 14 tournaments played this year and will next play Thiemo de Bakker.
World No. 104 de Bakker saved four match points to beat sixth seed Viktor Troicki 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(6). Troicki led 5-2 and 6-4 in the third set tie-break.
Second seed Nicolas Almagro, the 2010 champion (d. Soderling) and two-time runner-up, battled past Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 in just over two hours. It was the 41st meeting between two Spaniards on the ATP World Tour this season.
Almagro will next meet another Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco, who reached his first clay-court quarter-final in 12 months. The eighth seed lost four of his first service points to beat Jan-Lennard Struff 6-1, 7-5 in 83 minutes. Twelve months ago, he advanced to the Vegeta Croatia Open Umag semi-finals (l. to Granollers).
Lindstedt's Run Ends
Robert Lindstedt, who reached the doubles final in each of the past four years, has made a quarter-final exit with Daniel Nestor. The top seeds were beaten by Nicholas Monroe and Simon Stadler 6-4, 6-3. Lindstedt had won the title in 2010-2012 with Horia Tecau. In 2009, he finished runner-up with Robin Soderling.
