by ATP Staff|
Top seed Janko Tipsarevic opened his title campaign at the Claro Open Colombia with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Belgian Ruben Bemelmans, and will confront Colombia's No. 2 player, Alejandro Falla, in the quarter-finals.
The World No. 16, who shared this week on social media that he and his wife Biljana are expecting their first child, needed just a break in each set for the one hour, 21-minute victory. Tipsarevic opened his 2013 campaign by winning the title at the Aircel Chennai Open (d. Bautista Agut) and is through to his fourth quarter-final of the season.
Falla finished strong to defeat Australian Matthew Ebden 7-6(1), 6-1 in his second-round match. The 29 year old, who is currently No. 122 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, last reached a tour-level quarter-final this past February at the SAP Open, also a hard-court tournament.
Canadian Vasek Pospisil secured his place in the last eight after battling past Australian James Duckworth 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in one hour and 52 minutes. He will next face first-time ATP World Tour quarter-finalist Matteo Viola, who ousted fourth-seeded Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3, 7-5.
The top-seeded Colombian duo of Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah prevailed in their quarter-final match against Marcelo Arevalo and Victor Estrella Burgos 4-6, 7-6(3), 10-8. Second seeds Roger-Vasselin and Igor Sijsling also advanced in a Match Tie-break, edging Italians Adrian Mannarino and Viola 7-6(0), 3-6, 10-2.
