Former champion Marcel Granollers made a strong start to his Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad campaign on Monday, upsetting seventh seed Lukas Rosol 6-2, 6-4. The Spaniard is bidding to reclaim the title he won in 2011 with victory over Fernando Verdasco.
World No. 51 Granollers improved to a 13-16 match record on the season, highlighted by quarter-finals in Rome and Sydney. He goes on to face either defending champion Thomaz Bellucci or last week’s Hamburg runner-up Federico Delbonis.
Sixth seed Mikhail Youzhny improved to 6-2 in his FedEx ATP Head2Head series against 2007 titlist Paul-Henri Mathieu after a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win interrupted by rain. He will next play Pablo Andujar or qualifier Victor Crivoi.
Fifth-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, a finalist in 2006, opened with a 7-6(2), 6-3 win over Czech qualifier Jan Hernych. He will look to reach the Gstaad quarter-finals for a third straight year when he faces Andrey Kuznetsov.
