Spaniard Albert Montanes prevented an all-French quarter-final between Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils at the Vegeta Croatia Open Umag, when he upset the top-seeded Gasquet 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday. In his previous five tour-level matches against Gasquet, the 49th-ranked Montanes had won just one of 13 sets played.

The victory over the World No. 9 snapped a 13-match losing streak against Top 10 players, with his last win coming against a No. 1-ranked Roger Federer in 2010 at Estoril. It also ended a five-match losing streak in Umag that began with a quarter-final exit on his tournament debut in 2001.

Monfils advanced to his sixth quarter-final of the season with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Blaz Kavcic in 69 minutes, converting four of his five break points and saving the four he faced.

Montanes and Monfils faced off two months ago in the Nice final, a match Montanes won in straight sets to improve to 4-1 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series. All four of his wins have come on clay.

Fabio Fognini extended his winning streak to 11 matches when the third seed defeated Thiemo de Bakker 7-5, 6-3.

Fognini is full of confidence after winning back-to-back ATP World Tour titles in the past two weeks at the MercedesCup (d. Kohlschreiber) and the bet-at-home Open – German Tennis Championships (d. Delbonis).

The Italian, who is currently at a career-high No. 19 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, will now play sixth seed Martin Klizan in the quarter-finals. Klizan saved 10 of 14 break points to beat Leonardo Mayer 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(3) in just over two hours and 30 minutes.

Fognini and Klizan are tied at 1-1 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series. They last met in June at the Aegon International.
