Juan Martin del Potro is into the semi-finals at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati for the second year in a row after defeating Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 on Friday.

The seventh seed required a little under two hours to get the win, breaking once in the first set and twice in the decider. Tursunov won a marathon 12-minute game to hold on to serve at 3-0 in the third set, but del Potro assumed command the rest of the way.

''It was a really tough match for me. It’s not easy playing a quarter-final in a Masters 1000 but I think I did well in the end,'' said del Potro courtside after the match, having now won both career meetings with the Russian.

He was pleased with his serve overall, firing 15 aces and winning 81 percent of his first serve points.

"I served well.  I made many aces.  I'm looking forward to tomorrow," del Potro said afterwards.

The Argentine will face American John Isner in the semi-finals, where he will be going for his third career Masters 1000 final.

Del Potro has won all four of their career meetings, including a three-set victory in the Washington final two weeks ago.

"But in the semi-finals in the Masters, all the players are here and they are playing so well, he said.

In addition to his titles at Washington and Rotterdam earlier this year, the 2009 US Open champion also enjoyed success at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event at Indian Wells in March, when he defeated both Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray to reach the final. He is 25-6 on hard courts so far this year and came into the week ranked No. 4 in the FedEx ATP Reliability Index for the best hard court winning percentages this season.
