Fifth seed Tomas Berdych will play ninth seed Stanislas Wawrinka in the US Open fourth round.
Berdych recorded his third straight victory over No. 31 seed Julien Benneteau in one hour and 53 minutes on Sunday. The World No. 5 hit 36 winners, including 11 aces, in a 6-0, 6-3, 6-2 win. He has yet to drop a set at the major championship this year.
"It was a bit hot, a bit humid, but otherwise [the] tennis was good," said Berdych. "Finally, I managed to stay focused from the first point until the last. I took all my chances that I had and won in straight sets."
The 27-year-old Czech beat Roger Federer in the 2012 quarter-finals, before losing to Andy Murray in four sets.
Berdych goes on to play No. 9 seed Stanislas Wawrinka, who has reached the fourth round or better at three majors this year. Wawrinka leads Berdych 6-5 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.
“He's a great player, [a] really strong, powerful player," said Berdych. "It's always tough to play against him. Usually we [have] had some great battle together. I need to adapt my game a little bit, because he's so powerful. I know if I'm if fit and if I play well, I have a chance.”
Wawrinka, who also reached the Roland Garros quarter-finals and Australian Open fourth round, defeated Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 6-2, 6-7(1), 7-6(7). Wawrinka had match points at 6-4 and 7-6 in the tie-break, before converting his fourth opportunity on serve.
“I'm really happy,” said Wawrinka. “It was a tough fourth set. We were both playing good. It was physically really difficult with the heat and humidity today.”
So far this year, 28-year-old Wawrinka has lifted the Portugal Open (d. Ferrer) trophy and finished runner-up at the Copa Claro (l. to Ferrer), the Mutua Madrid Open (l. to Nadal) and the Topshelf Open (l. to Mahut).
