Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan continued their bid to capture a calendar year Grand Slam on Sunday.
The top-seeded Americans were made to fight for a 6-7(1), 7-5, 6-2 victory over Canadians Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil for a place in the US Open quarter-finals.
The Bryans are trying to become the first doubles team since Australians Ken McGregor and Frank Sedgman in 1951 to win all four major championships in the same year.
Nestor and Pospisil struck five aces and 30 winners in the first set, which did not include a break of serve. After losing the set the Bryans decided to switch sides - with Bob Bryan moving to backhand court, the traditional place for lefties.
"It was Bob's idea," said Mike Bryan. "He just came up to me. He's like, ‘You want to switch?’
"It's a pretty big deal because we just never practice the other way. “I have only taken a few deuce court returns in the last three, four years. We're not very comfortable with our second shots. We're not used to poaching with our backhand volleys in the middle. But when you're desperate, you kind have nothing to lose just because we didn't have much hope the other way."
Mike Bryan was broken to 15 in the seventh game, before they started to build momentum. Nestor lost his serve to 30 in the next game and again at 5-6, when he served two double faults – including on set point. Nestor and Pospisil committed 10 unforced errors to one for the Bryans.
Nestor was broken twice more in the deciding set as the Bryans rolled to their 57th match victory of the season (57-7 overall). During their 32-match 'Golden Grand Slam' winning streak, this was the seventh time the Bryans had been taken to a decisive set.
The Bryans have won the London 2012 Olympics gold medal and also the last four major titles. In 2013, they have captured 10 crowns. On 19 August, they clinched the year-end No. 1 Emirates ATP Doubles Team Ranking for a record ninth time and for the fifth consecutive season.
