Ferrer, Gasquet Reach Third Round

Fourth seed David Ferrer recorded his 25th match win at Flushing Meadows on Thursday when he defeated fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-2 for a place in the US Open third round.
Ferrer, 31, won 69 per cent of his first service points in the pair’s second FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting. The 2007 and 2012 semi-finalist goes on to challenge qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin, who is through to the third round for the first time after a 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 win over Andreas Haider-Maurer.
Eighth seed Richard Gasquet recovered from a slow start to beat qualifier and fellow Frenchman Stephane Robert 6-3, 7-5, 7-5. By recording his 36th match win of the season he will now play No. 32 seed Dmitry Tursunov, who was leading Guillaume Rufin 7-6(4), 1-1 when his opponent retired due to a right groin strain.
Janko Tipsarevic, who has reached the quarter-finals for the past two years, overcame Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-4, 6-1. The No. 18 seed will next face qualifier Jack Sock. Sock ousted qualifier Maximo Gonzalez 7-6(3), 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 to reach the third round in successive years.
Doubles Seeds Beaten In Openers
Eighth seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski, the 2011 US Open finalists, who are currently No. 4 in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings, lost to Sergiy Stakhovsky and Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 6-4 in the first round.
Ninth seeds David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco were also first round casualties for the second successive year. The Spanish team were beaten by this season’s US Men’s Clay Court Championship and Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad titlists Jamie Murray and John Peers 7-6(4), 6-4.
Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram, the 2008 Australian Open champions, knocked out 11th seeds Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky 6-2, 6-3. Gonzalez and Lipsky have won the Portugal Open and Gerry Weber Open this season.
