The right-hander converted his fourth match point to improve his FedEx ATP Head2Head record against the Serb to 5-1. Ferrer fired 13 aces during the match and saved nine of 14 break points, en route to becoming only the sixth player after Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Ivan Lendl to reach all four Grand Slam quarter-finals in consecutive years, in the Open Era.
"I think it was my best match this week," said Ferrer. "I [tried] to be focused every point, to fight." The No. 2 Spaniard, who played on Grandstand, said he had no preference of courts.
"My goal is to win the matches as possible and to be consistent. [If in my next match] I will play on center court, perfect. If not, I don't worry."
Ferrer next faces eighth seed Richard Gasquet who reached in the US Open quarter-finals for the first time in his career with a 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(9), 7-5 win over 10th seed Milos Raonic in a match that lasted four hours and 40 minutes.
The Frenchman saved one match point in the fourth set tie-breaker, and served six aces to Raonic's 39. Gasquet trails Ferrer 1-8 in prior meetings, with the Spaniard winning their last encounter in the fourth round of last year's US Open in straight sets.
