Fognini Advances In St. Petersburg; Tursunov Beats Baghdatis

Fognini defeated qualifier Dominic Inglot 6-4, 6-4 in 68 minutes.
The World No. 17 is attempting to become the first Italian to finish in the year-end Top 20 Emirates ATP Rankings since 1978 when Corrado Barazzutti finished No. 10.
Fourth seed Dmitry Tursunov opened his campaign with a 7-6(3), 7-6(3) victory over Marcos Baghdatis. The Russian, a semi-finalist in 2010 (l. to Youzhny), is bidding to win his first ATP World Tour title since 2011, when he triumphed in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. He squandered a 5-2 advantage in the second set, but closed out victory in a second tie-break in two hours, inflicting a 12th first-round defeat of the season on Baghdatis.
Eighth seed Denis Istomin battled past Samuel Groth 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in one hour and 46 minutes. Istomin converted five of his six break points to claim his 28th win of the season. The 27 year old is coming off a run to the fourth round of the US Open (l. to Murray).
Russian Evgeny Donskoy, who reached the third round in New York (l. to Hewitt), defeated Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-1, 6-4.
Meanwhile, there were mixed results for the two Spaniards in action. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez dismissed qualifier Mikhail Biryukov 6-4, 6-1, but Daniel Gimeno-Traver was beaten by Jurgen Zopp 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Marrero/Verdasco, Bracciali/Dlouhy Into Doubles QFs
Top-seeded Spaniards David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco rallied for a 1-6, 6-3, 10-5 win over Mateusz Kowalczyk and Igor Zelenay in their opener. Third seeds Daniele Bracciali and Lukas Dlouhy began their quest for the doubles crown with a 6-1, 7-6(5) win over wild cards Mikhail Elgin and Alexander Kudryavtsev.
