Two contenders for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals made successful starts at the China Open in Beijing on Tuesday. Fifth seed Richard Gasquet defeated Florian Mayer 6-3, 7-6(2), while sixth seed Stanislas Wawrinka battled past Andreas Seppi 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 48 minutes.
Having both reached the US Open semi-finals, Gasquet losing to Rafael Nadal and Wawrinka falling to Novak Djokovic, they are in a strong position in the Emirates ATP Race To London, from which the Top 8 will qualify for the season finale in London. Wawrinka is currently in eighth spot, while Gasquet is just 155 points behind him in ninth position.
The 28-year-old Wawrinka began the ATP World Tour Asian swing last week with a semi-final showing at the Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur (l. to Benneteau). He is making his debut in Beijing as he looks to win his second ATP World Tour title of the season.

Gasquet, 27, was also a semi-finalist last week, at the Thailand Open in Bangkok (l. to Raonic), and improved to a 42-16 mark on the season. He was a quarter-finalist in Beijing on his 2008 debut.
Gasquet and Wawrinka were later joined in the second round by fellow London hopefuls, Tomas Berdych and David Ferrer. The fourth-seeded Berdych cruised past Pablo Andujar 6-4, 6-1 in 76 minutes. The Czech converted his four break point chances to earn his 48th win of the season.
Berdych is coming off a runner-up showing in Bangkok (l. to Raonic) and is looking to win his first ATP World Tour title of the season this week. He goes straight through to the quarter-finals after his next opponent, Nikolay Davydenko, withdrew from the tournament with a right wrist injury after defeating qualifier Yen-Hsun Lu 7-6(3), 6-4 in one hour and 34 minutes.
Ferrer faced a late night battle with Canadian Vasek Pospisil, prevailing 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2) after two hours and 10 minutes. The Spaniard finished runner-up in Beijing in 2010 (l. to Djokovic) and is bidding for his third ATP World Tour title of the season.
Fernando Verdasco set a second-round clash with top seed Novak Djokovic after dismissing qualifier Somdev Devvarman 7-6(6), 6-3. Meanwhile, Sam Querrey will face Wawrinka after defeating Mikhail Youzhny 7-6(3), 6-3.
Djokovic/Wawrinka Beat No. 2 Seeds
Last month they faced off in a gripping US Open semi-final, but on Tuesday Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Wawrinka were on the same side of the net to defeat second seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Robert Lindstedt 6-3, 6-3 in the Beijing doubles first round.
In the quarter-finals they will face Tommy Haas and Florian Mayer after the Germans edged Chinese wild cards Mao-Xin Gong and Zhe Li 7-5, 3-6, 10-8.
British duo Colin Fleming and Jonathan Marray battled past Philipp Kohlscreiber and Mikhail Youzhny 7-6(8), 4-6, 10-7, while Italians Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi upset ‘Polish Power’ Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 6-2, 6-4.
