by ATP Staff|
Fabio Fognini set a quarter-final clash with Rafael Nadal at the China Open after dismissing former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt 6-0, 6-2 on Wednesday in Beijing.
Fognini prevailed in just 59 minutes, breaking Hewitt on six occasions in their first meeting. The Italian is through to his first ATP World Tour quarter-final since July, when he went on a three-week tear that saw him win back-to-back titles in Stuttgart (d. Kohlschreiber) and Hamburg (d. Delbonis) and reach the final in Umag (l. to Robredo).
Eighth seed John Isner battled past qualifier Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-4 in just over two hours to claim his 36th win of the season. The American, who is still in with a chance to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, is looking to reach his fifth ATP World Tour final of the season this week. He won the titles in Houston (d. Almagro) and Atlanta (d.Anderson) and finished runner-up in Cincinnati (l. to Nadal) and Washington (l. to del Potro).
Isner goes on to meet fourth seed Tomas Berdych. The pair have split their four FedEx ATP Head2Head previous meetings, with Isner winning the most recent clash in the 2012 Winston-Salem Open final.
Mirnyi/Tecau Upset Benneteau/Zimonjic
In a clash between 11th and ninth in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings, Max Mirnyi and Horia Tecau defeated Julien Benneteau and Nenad Zimonjic 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. The Belarusian/Romanian duo are chasing their third title of the year as they look to boost their bid to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.
Other London contenders, David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco, also reached the quarter-finals as they battled past Grigor Dimitrov and Tommy Robredo 7-5, 6-7(5), 10-7.
Top seeds Daniel Nestor and Leander Paes cruised into the quarter-finals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over John Isner and Sam Querrey in 50 minutes. Nestor and Paes, with a combined age of 81, won the Winston-Salem Open title in August.
Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Wawrinka delighted fans on the Lotus Court with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tommy Haas and Florian Mayer in the quarter-finals. However, third seeds Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer were upset by Italians Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi 6-2, 7-6(5).
