by ATP Staff|
The 25-year-old del Potro won 85 per cent of his first service points and committed just eight unforced errors.
"I played very well today, very solid," said del Potro, who has overcome a fever. "I played aggressive. I hit my forehand very well. I like the way I played today. I just want to keep improving [and] keep going far in this tournament."
Del Potro now has 4,180 points in the Emirates ATP Race To London. The 2009 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals runner-up is attempting to qualify for the prestigious event, to be held at The O2 in London from 4-11 November, for the fourth time.
Almagro, 28, dropped to 1-8 in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarter-finals. He is 14th in the Emirates ATP Race To London.

Murray/Peers Break New Ground
Jamie Murray and John Peers, who finished runners up in the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships last week (l. to Bopanna/Roger-Vasselin), reached their first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 team semi-final. The duo defeated Robert Lindstedt and Vasek Pospisil 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 in 74 minutes.
Later in the day, in an all-Spanish quarter-final, eighth seeds David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco knocked out second seeds Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez 6-3, 6-4. Granollers and Lopez could have qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals if they had reached the Shanghai final.
