Stanislas Wawrinka took a big stride on Thursday in his attempts to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals when he reached the Shanghai Rolex Masters quarter-finals.

The 28 year old moved up one place to seventh position in the Emirates ATP Race To London, overtaking his Swiss compatriot Roger Federer. Wawrinka (3,150 points) leads Federer (3,145) by five points.

ATP World Tour stars are battling to clinch one of five remaining singles berth at the prestigious event, to be held at The O2 in London, from 4-11 November.

Wawrinka knocked out 10th-placed Milos Raonic, on his own good run of form, 7-6(2), 6-4 in 81 minutes.

Raonic, who is also attempting to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for the first time, won the Thailand Open in Bangkok (d. Berdych) two weeks ago and finished runner-up at last week’s Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo (l. to del Potro).

Wawrinka goes on to face World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, a winner of 10 titles from 13 finals this year.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga added 90 points in the Emirates ATP Race To London to rise one spot to 10th place. He moves ahead of Milos Raonic.
