Kukushkin To Face Dolgopolov; Donskoy Upsets Baghdatis

Mikhail Kukushkin, who qualified for the Kremlin Cup by Bank of Moscow for the third time, hit six aces and lost just three of his first service points to beat Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-4, 6-1 in 68 minutes on Tuesday. Kukushkin reached the semi-finals as a qualifier four years ago (l. to Youzhny). He will next challenge fourth seed Alexandr Dolgopolov.
World No. 84 Evgeny Donskoy saved six of eight break points as he defeated Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in one hour and 47 minutes. The Russian dealt former World No. 8 Baghdatis his 14th first-round loss of the season to set up a second-round meeting with top seed Richard Gasquet.
Dudi Sela defeated Aslan Karatsev 6-4, 6-3 to reach the second round. The Israeli is coming off victory at the ATP Challenger Tour event in Tashkent last week and advanced in 84 minutes, saving nine of the 11 break points he faced.
In a contest between two qualifiers, Andrey Golubev defeated Oleksandr Nedovyesov 6-2, 7-5 to set a second-round meeting with sixth seed Horacio Zeballos. The No. 131-ranked Golubev is bidding to reach his first ATP World Tour quarter-final of the season.
Paolo Lorenzi will play fellow Italian and second seed Andreas Seppi in the second round after coming past another compatriot, Filippo Volandri. Lorenzi was leading Volandri 3-6, 7-5, 4-1 when his opponent retired due to a right quad strain.
Mixed Fortunes For Doubles Seeds
Top seeds Max Mirnyi and Horia Tecau opened their Moscow campaign with a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory over Paolo Lorenzi and Andreas Seppi. The Belarusian/Romanian duo are making their team debut in Moscow as they look to push their bid to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. They started the week at ninth in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings, just outside the qualification spots.
Second seeds and 2011 champions Frantisek Cermak and Filip Polasek and third seeds Tomasz Bednarek and Daniele Bracciali both lost in the first round. Rameez Junaid and Philipp Marx defeated Cermak and Polasek 6-2, 6-7(7), 10-2, while Russians Mikhail Elgin and Denis Istomin beat Bednarek and Bracciali 6-3, 6-3.
