Teenager Upsets Tipsarevic In Moscow

Former champion Janko Tipsarevic was beaten on Wednesday in the Kremlin Cup by Bank of Moscow.

Wild card Karen Khachanov, 17, defeated the third seed and 2011 titlist 6-4, 6-4 in 77 minutes to become the youngest quarter-finalist of the season. In July, he won the European Junior Championships in Switzerland.

Second seed and defending champion Andreas Seppi reached his sixth ATP World Tour quarter-final (or better) after a 6-3, 6-2 win over fellow Italian Paolo Lorenzi. He will face Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who won 79 per cent of his service points in beating Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-5, 7-5 in 86 minutes.

Elsewhere, qualifier Andrey Golubev booked a spot in the quarter-finals after he knocked out sixth seed Horacio Zeballos 6-3, 6-4.

In first round action, fifth seed Denis Istomin recorded his second win over Andrey Kuznetsov this year with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 victory. Istomin saved eight of 10 break points. 

He goes on to face Ivo Karlovic, who added to his ace tally for the year when he beat Denis Kudla 6-2, 6-3. Karlovic lost eight of his service points and hit 15 aces – for 412 aces overall in 2013.

Wild card Teymuraz Gabashvili, who is playing in Moscow for the 10th year in a row, caused an upset when he beat eighth seed Adrian Mannarino 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
