Pospisil Defeats Hewitt in Vienna

Erste Bank Open seventh seed Vasek Pospisil fought off Australian Lleyton Hewitt to win 7-6(6), 6-4 in the first round on Tuesday. The Canadian secured the battle’s only break and served 12 aces en route to his victory.
Top seed and Barclays ATP World Tour Finals contender Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will open his Erste Bank Open campaign against Daniel Brands. The German upset 2010 runner-up and home favourite Andreas Haider-Maurer 6-4, 7-6(5) in the first round in Vienna on Tuesday.
Qualifier Mirza Basic recorded his second ATP World Tour main draw win as he defeated Michael Russell 6-3, 6-4. The 22 year old from Bosnia and Herzegovina set a clash with eighth seed Lukas Rosol.
Robin Haase finished strongly to defeat qualifier Ilija Bozoljac 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 in one hour and 45 minutes. The Dutchman claimed his 26th win of the season, highlighted by finishing runner-up in Gstaad (l. to Youzhny). Haase faces Pospisil in his next match.
Austrian wild card Dominic Thiem battled past Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in just over two hours to reach the second round for the third year in a row. The 20 year old will face either sixth seed Gael Monfils or Marinko Matosevic.
Lukas Lacko beat Austrian Gerald Melzer, a wild card, 7-6(5), 6-1. Lacko, from Slovakia, plays fifth seed Radek Stepanek in the second round.
