SWISS INDOORS BASEL 2013
Berdych, Wawrinka's London Bids Put On Hold In Basel
by ATP Staff|
Tomas Berdych’s Barclays ATP World Tour Finals qualification bid was put on hold Tuesday when the second-seeded Czech failed to convert a match point in a tough 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(2) loss against Ivo Karlovic at the Swiss Indoors Basel.
The 6’11” Karlovic denied Berdych his chance to clinch the victory in the 10th game of the third set, coming up with an ace - one of his 23 in the match - at 30/40. The Croat, a semi-finalist last week in Moscow (l. to Gasquet), improved to a 18-11 mark in tie-breaks this season.
Berdych did not face a break point and won 78 per cent of his service points, compared to 69 per cent by Karlovic, during the two hour, 22-minute opener.
Berdych is next in line to qualify for the season finale, and began the week with a 650-point lead over his nearest opponent in the Emirates ATP Race To London. He would’ve been assured of qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals by reaching the semi-finals this week.
Stanislas Wawrinka also missed the chance to strengthen his position in the Emirates ATP Race To London on home soil this week as he was beaten in the first round. The Swiss lost to Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 6-3.
Wawrinka slipped to eighth in the standings when he was overtaken by Roger Federer, following his countryman’s first-round win on Monday. Ninth-placed Gasquet is just 30 points behind Wawrinka and opens his Basel campaign on Wednesday against Michael Llodra.
The 29-year-old Roger-Vasselin recorded just the second Top 10 win of his career (2-11 record) as he converted three of his six break points for victory in 71 minutes. The Frenchman is coming off a quarter-final showing in Moscow (l. to Seppi) and has a 21-24 match record on the season.
