EMIRATES ATP RACE TO LONDON 2013
Federer Presses Finals Claim In Basel
by ATP Staff|
Any points Federer earns at his hometown tournament, the Swiss Indoors Basel, will be a straight add to his Emirates ATP Race To London points total. His rivals in action this week - Tomas Berdych, Stanislas Wawrinka, Richard Gasquet and Tommy Haas - all have a best 18th result worth 90 points and must minimally reach the semi-finals to add to their totals.
Simply by reaching the second round Monday, Federer moved past Wawrinka into seventh spot in the Emirates ATP Race To London. Should Federer finish the week with his sixth Basel title, he would increase his lead over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the 10th position to 590 points going into the final week of the regular season. Tsonga is not playing this week and returns to action at the BNP Paribas Masters, where he won the title in 2008. The Paris champion will earn 1,000 points, while the runner-up will receive 600.
Berdych, a possible semi-final opponent for Federer in Basel, will be certain to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals if he reaches the last four this week. The Czech began the tournament with a 650-point lead over his nearest London competitor.
Wawrinka and Gasquet also look to strengthen their Race standings this week in Basel, where they are in the top half of the draw and could meet in the semi-finals. Gasquet moved up one to the coveted ninth position, the final qualification spot, with victory on Sunday at the Kremlin Cup by Bank of Moscow.
Haas, at No. 12 in the Emirates ATP Race To London, also lifted his outside chances of qualifying with his triumph at the Erste Open in Vienna. He can overtake Milos Raonic in the 11th position by winning the Valencia Open 500 title this week.
