Juan Martin del Potro has won Argentina’s Sportsman of the Year award at the Sporto Argentino Festival.

Del Potro beat football superstar Lionel Messi, who was among the favourites.

“[I am] very happy to have received the consecration Gold Prize of Clarin,” said del Potro in a statement on his Facebook page. “I share [the award] with my team, my family and you..... Thanks a lot!

“It was a great year, much better than [I] expected. I was there, fighting in the first place. The main thing is I feel very close to the top of the world again. I'm already looking at next season.”

The Tandil native finished 2013 at No. 5 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. He won four titles at ATP World Tour 500 tournaments, reached ATP World Tour Masters 1000 finals at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and the Shanghai Rolex Masters. He also made a semi-final exit at The Championships, Wimbledon.
