The Portugal Open received a €10,000 ATP ACES For Charity grant in support of the Academia dos Champs on Monday in Oeiras.

David Massey, Vice President, ATP Europe, presented the cheque to Tournament Director João Lagos and Academia dos Champs representatives Francisco Alvim and Miguel Plantier.

“We are very proud. It’s a huge honour for us to be among the projects selected by the ATP ACES For Charity,” said Academy director Alvim. “We have always believed in the potential of our project but it’s good to see our work recognised. More than the monetary value we are happy for the added value and credibility that this grant will bring to Champs Academy. It’s good to feel that our work is now starting to reach the necessary foundations to succeed in bringing our tennis lessons further. It is important to know that these young people believe in their abilities and dreams might be more real than you think.”

The Academia dos Champs (ADC), supported by the Portugal Open since its launch in 2009, aims to enable as many children as possible to take control of their future and to actively shape it through tennis. It identifies locations where a need is spotted and establishes ADC Tennis Centres, offering tennis lessons and tournaments through which children develop social and personal skills that will provide them with a sense of direction.

The ATP ACES for Charity grant will support the cost of a new centre in the Cascais Municipality for a year.

“We hope we can continue to count on all the support we have had so far from our partners,” said Alvim. “This grant is one more reason to foresee a new year full of motivation for new challenges. The formalisation of ATP ACES For Charity grant during this event couldn’t make us more satisfied. This is one of the unique opportunities that our children have to be able to know the reality of professional tennis closely and the best opportunity we have to take our project to the community.”
