Two of the ATP World Tour’s rising stars were recognised in an on-court ceremony at The O2 on Tuesday as they received their ATP World Tour Awards presented by Moët & Chandon.
Jiri Vesely received the prize for the ATP Star of Tomorrow presented by Emirates, while Pablo Carreno Busta's fellow players voted for him as The Most Improved Player of The Year.
"I started the year No. 263; I never expected to make the Top 100,” said Vesely, who won his award for being the youngest player to have finished in the Top 100 on the Emirates ATP Rankings (as of 28 October).
The Czech broke into the Top 100 on 8 July – two days before his 20th birthday – and reached a career-high No. 78 by August. He made his tour-level main draw debut as a qualifier at Roland Garros and also won three ATP Challenger Tour titles from five finals.
“At the beginning of the season I won two Challengers, which helped to give me confidence and win many more matches,” said Vesely. “And now I'm here."
The 22-year-old Carreno Busta earned his award after climbing from a year-end No. 715 Emirates ATP Ranking last season to a career-high No. 66 in 2013, beginning with an impressive effort on the Futures circuit that saw him win 35 straight matches and seven titles from eight finals.
The Barcelona resident also reached the Oeiras semi-finals on the ATP World Tour and made his Grand Slam debut at Roland Garros. He excelled on the ATP Challenger Tour, going 4-0 in finals.
"It was an incredible season, winning seven Futures titles,” said Carreno Busta. “I improved my tennis and my [Emirates ATP] Ranking and I would love to be here next year at The O2."
Qureshi Presented ATP ACES For Charity Grant
Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi was presented with a $10,000 cheque for Stop War, Start Tennis from Alison Lee, Executive Vice President, International Group, on behalf of ATP ACES For Charity later in the day.
The Right Honourable John Bercow MP, Speaker of the House of Commons, assisted in the presentation to show his support for Qureshi’s charitable initiative. Bercow was introduced to Qureshi through his coach, Robert Davis.
