Gojowczyk Leads 16 Qualifiers Into Australian Open Main Draw

Recent Doha semi-finalist Peter Gojowczyk led 16 qualifiers into the main draw of the Australian Open as qualifying action concluded on Saturday at Melbourne Park. World No. 136 Gojowczyk earned a main draw clash with Victor Hanescu after defeating Flavio Cipolla 6-2, 6-3.
Gojowczyk was not the only German to qualify. Michael Berrer will make his sixth main draw appearance after finishing strongly to defeat Stephane Robert 7-5, 6-1.
A trio of Americans also advanced, with Denis Kudla dismissing Alex Kuznetsov 6-4, 6-2, Rhyne Williams battling past Thiemo de Bakker 2-6, 7-6(6), 6-2 and Wayne Odesnik defeating Adrian Menendez-Maceiras 6-3, 2-6, 8-6. Williams was rewarded with a first-round contest against Apia International Sydney champion Juan Martin del Potro.
There will be two Chinese players in the men’s main draw after Ze Zhang joined Di Wu by defeating Illya Marchenko 7-5,6-3. He will face No. 31 seed Fernando Verdasco in the first round.
