Colombia’s World No. 68 Santiago Giraldo reached his fourth consecutive second round at Auckland’s Heineken Open, combining a total of ten aces and ten break points to overcome Spaniard Albert Montanes 6-1, 7-6(3) in their first-round match on Monday.
Giraldo, a semi-finalist at Auckland in 2011, awaits the winner of eighth seed Robin Haase and Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who play their first-round match on Tuesday.
American 21-year-old wild card Jack Sock set up a match for young and old against veteran second seed Tommy Haas after firing 11 aces en route to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Frenchman Adrian Mannarino in the first round.
Horacio Zeballos could face fifth seed and 2008 champion Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round after defeating Filippo Volandri 6-0, 7-6(1), Kohlschreiber faces upcoming Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in his opener.
In doubles action, Eric Butorac and Raven Klaasen defeated Paul Hanley and Jonathan Marray 6-2, 7-6(7) in 73 minutes.
