Third seeds David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco survived a scare in their first-round contest at the Australian Open on Friday, rallying from a set down to defeat Australians James Duckworth and Matthew Ebden 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The Barclays ATP World Tour Finals doubles champions reached the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park last year (l. to Haase/Sijsling) and are looking to win their first major title. There was disappointment for their countrymen and third seeds, Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez, though, as they were beaten in the second round by Max Mirnyi and Mikhail Youzhny 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).

Granollers and Lopez were not the only seeds to be upset. Yuki Bhambri and Michael Venus defeated 10th seeds Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.

Fifth seeds and 2012 Australian Open champions Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek made a strong start to their campaign, defeating Czech pairing Lukas Dlouhy and Lukas Rosol 6-4, 6-1. Fourth seeds Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo also reached the second round, beating Australians Chris Guccione and Thanasi Kokkinakis 7-5, 7-6(5).
