Denis Istomin will face fourth seed Dmitry Tursunov in the second round of the Open Sud de France after beating Turkish qualifier Marsel Ilhan 6-4, 7-5 on Tuesday in Montpellier.
It will be the pair’s third FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting of the season. Istomin won they met in the second round of the Australian Open last month, avenging the defeat he had suffered one week earlier in the Sydney quarter-finals.
World No. 43 Istomin didn’t face a break point as he defeated Ilhan in 74 minutes, converting two of his three break points. The Uzbekistani, who is making his debut in Montpellier, claimed his fifth win of the season.
Third seed Jerzy Janowicz will open his campaign against Adrian Mannarino, who won an all-French clash with lucky loser Vincent Millot 6-4, 6-4 in 76 minutes.
Qualifier Marc Gicquel will face second seed Gilles Simon in the second round after defeating Michael Llodra 6-4, 7-6(4) in an all-French first-round contest. It was Gicquel’s first tour-level win since reaching the second round at The Queen’s Club in June 2010.
World No. 249 Albano Olivetti recorded just his fourth tour-level win as he beat fellow Frenchman Kenny De Schepper 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 in just under two hours. The 22-year-old Olivetti qualified into the main draw and fired 14 aces to claim the win, setting up a second-round clash with either Julien Benneteau or Nikolay Davydenko.
