Mayer capitalised on three of his 20 break points, while saving six of the seven faced. The 26 year old is making his fourth straight tournament appearance and advances to the second round for a second time.
Mayer leads Robredo in their FedEx ATP Head2Head with victory in their one previous meeting, two years ago at the US Open. Robredo won the Royal Guard Open Chile in 2011, when the tournament was held in Santiago.
Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, the No. 7 seed, rallied from a set and a break down to defeat German Julian Reister 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 40 minutes. The players created a combined 41 break point chances, with Garcia-Lopez converting six times and Reister five.
Garcia-Lopez, 30, has an opportunity to reach the 200 match wins milestone this week. He has a 197-227 singles record following Monday's win, and awaits the winner between Paolo Lorenzi and Alejandro Gonzalez in the second round.
In doubles, second-seeded Colombians Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah teamed up for a 6-4, 6-4 win over Spaniards Pablo Carreno Busta and Albert Ramos. The other Colombian duo in action, Santiago Giraldo and Alejandro Gonzalez, fell to third seeds Oliver Marach and Florin Mergea 7-5, 5-7, 11-9.
