Watch Almagro vs Gimeno-Traver Highlights
After winning just one point on return in the opening set, Almagro capitalised on his first break point in the second set and broke Gimeno-Traver’s serve two more times in the third for the 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 win. He improved to a 6-2 record against his countryman, and to a 21-7 record in Buenos Aires.
Almagro, the 2011 champion, takes a 4-0 FedEx ATP Head2Head record into his next match against Jeremy Chardy. The Frenchman advanced to his third quarter-final of the year after surviving a third-set tie-break against Alexandr Dolgopolov.
Chardy, who also reached the quarters last week in Vina del Mar, saved four of five break points to win 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3). Earlier in the week Dolgopolov had won a third-set tie-break to beat Pablo Cuevas in the first round.
Chardy and Dolgopolov met last month in the Australian Open second round, when Chardy also squeaked out a tough four-set win, which included three tie-breaks.
Ferrer, playing his first clay-court tournament since a runner-up finish at Roland Garros, clinched the victory after one hour and 51 minutes to extend his Buenos Aires winning streak to 12 matches.
Granollers/Lopez Win Opener
The top-seeded duo of Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez made a winning debut in Buenos Aires, defeating Argentine wild cards Facundo Bagnis and Federico Delbonis 7-5, 6-2. The Spaniards reached the semi-finals last week in Vina del Mar.
In quarter-final action, fourth seeds Pablo Cuevas and Horacio Zeballos beat Gimeno-Traver and Albert Montanes 6-4, 7-5. They will face Argentines Maximo Gonzalez and Eduardo Schwank for a place in the final after the wild card pairing came back to defeat Chardy and Lukas Dlouhy 2-6, 6-4, 10-5.
