Czech Jiri Vesely knocked out fifth-seeded Australian Marinko Matosevic 6-3, 6-2 to kick off main draw action on Monday at the U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships in Memphis.

The 20-year-old Vesely, winner of the ATP Star of Tomorrow Award presented by Emirates in 2013, capitalised on four of his seven break points to record his second tour-level win. Matosevic had reached the semi-finals last year on his Memphis debut.

American veteran Michael Russell, 35, came from a set down to defeat Polish seventh seed Michal Przysiezny 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 to claim his first tour-level win of the year.

Russell next faces countryman Tim Smyczek, who rallied past 18-year-old Australian wild card Nick Kyrgios 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 55 minutes.

American wild cards Ryan Harrison and Sam Querrey teamed up for a 7-5, 1-6, 10-4 victory over Benjamin Becker and Yen-Hsun Lu in first-round doubles action. Querrey won the Memphis doubles title with John Isner in 2010, after defeating his countryman in the singles final.

Second seeds and Australian Open finalists Eric Butorac and Raven Klaasen also advanced, defeating Americans Jack Sock and Donald Young 7-6(4), 6-4.

Belgian’s David Goffin and a trio of Americans - Denis Kudla, Alex Kuznetsov and Rajeev Ram - all won in the final round of qualifying earlier Monday. Goffin and Kuznetsov will meet in the first round, while Kudla faces Donald Young and Ram plays Marcos Baghdatis.
