Bellucci Rallies To Win Rio Opener

Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci thrilled home country fans on Day 1 of the inaugural Rio Open presented by Claro hdtv, as he came back to defeat Colombian Santiago Giraldo in the night session.

The 130th-ranked Bellucci broke World No. 60 Giraldo for a fifth time in the match to go up 5-3 in the third set and served out the 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory after two hours and 25 minutes. It marked his second straight win over Giraldo, after losses in their first three FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings.

Argentine Federico Delbonis wasted no time in his first-round match against Guilherme Clezar, dismissing the Brazilian wild card 6-1, 6-1 in 51 minutes. He did not face any break points on serve, while breaking Clezar’s five times.

A trio of qualifiers won their first-round matches earlier Monday. 

KlizanSlovakian Martin Klizan kicked off men’s action on Center Court at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament with a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4) win over Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in two hours and 52 minutes.

Argentine Facundo Bagnis knocked out top Brazilian Joao Souza, currently No. 123 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, winning 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 after two hours and 27 minutes.

Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic also advanced, leading Filippo Volandri 6-7(7), 6-3, 4-0 when the Italian retired from the match with a right shoulder injury.

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal is the top seed in Rio de Janeiro, and is joined in the field by David Ferrer, Fabio Fognini, Tommy Robredo and Nicolas Almagro.

Peya/Soares Make Winning Start
Top seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares advanced with a 6-2, 3-6, 10-3 win over wild cards Juan Monaco and Andre Sa. Peya and Soares are looking to reach their third final in four tournaments this season.
