Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Robredo© RioOpen/FOTOJUMPTommy Robredo dropped just three games in his second-round win.

Fourth seed Tommy Robredo surrendered just three games as he strolled into the quarter-finals of the Rio Open presented by Claro hdtv on Wednesday. The Spaniard dismissed qualifier Dusan Lajovic 6-2, 6-1 in 67 minutes, dropping only nine points on serve.

The 31-year-old Robredo is coming off a semi-final showing at last week’s Copa Claro in Buenos Aires (l. to Fognini) and improved to an 8-3 match record on the season. The right-hander opened the year with a fourth-round run at the Australian Open, losing to eventual champion Stanislas Wawrinka.

To the delight of Brazilian fans, Thomaz Bellucci finished strongly after rallying from a set down to defeat Argentine Juan Monaco 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. He could next face second seed David Ferrer. Bellucci, who finished 2013 outside the Top 100 for the first time since 2007 after battling a nagging abdominal injury, improved to a 3-2 match record on the year.

Bellucci next meets second seed David Ferrer, who continued his quest for a second title in two weeks when he defeated Argentine Federico Delbonis 7-6(2), 6-1. Improving to a perfect 7-0 record on clay (14-3 overall) this year, Ferrer is chasing a record seventh career title during the Latin American swing. He won a third consecutive Copa Claro title in Buenos Aires last week.
