by Scoop Malinowski|
Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic is competing in this week's Sony Open Tennis. A recipient of the ATP Star of Tomorrow Award presented by Emirates in November 2013, the 20 year old is ranked No. 73 in the Emirates ATP Rankings.
In this Biofile with Scoop Malinowski, Vesely reveals his favourite sport outside of tennis, his choice for the funniest player on tour, why he plays the sport and more.
Tennis Inspiration: If you watch the top guys winning tournaments, getting Grand Slam titles, you're just motivated to win the same things. I want to be a great player, play the best tournaments and try to win trophies.
First Tennis Memory: My father is a tennis coach. So the first memory is playing at the wall by myself. That's the first memory of how I started playing tennis.
First Famous Player You Met Or Encountered: Maybe Ivan Lendl. It was at my club when I was 10 years old. Sometimes he visits the Czech Republic.
Last Book Read: They were books on Roger Federer and Andre Agassi, tennis books.
Current Car: I have a BMW.
Greatest Sports Moment: There are many great moments in my career already. One of the best memories was when I won the Australian Open junior title [in 2011]. Now in the main circuit, getting to the Top 100 was a great moment for me. And getting into the main draw of the 2013 US Open was also a great moment as well. So those are great moments for me and I just try to keep working on myself.
Most Painful Moment: If you play at a good level and then you lose the match. Or if you're the favourite and maybe you should win the match [but you lose]. It's very painful for every player. You have to learn to take the positives from it and try to work on it.
Favourite Tournaments: I like all four Grand Slams. For me the most favourite is Australian Open. I have the best memories there. Also I like it very much there. Same in New York. I just like the big cities. It's great to be there.
Funniest Players Encountered: I think Novak Djokovic.
Favourite Sport Outside Tennis: Well, I like golf. I just started playing in my free time. It's a great sport for getting away from tennis and everything else. I like watching soccer.
Why Do You Love Playing Tennis: You play for your own self. If you win it's because you have to fight for it every day. You wake up and you just want to get better and better. I like sports which are only for yourself, not a team sport.
Embarrassing Tennis Memory: When you lose the match after having a match point. I've lost that way a couple of times. I've lost many times but a few times from match point - that was embarrassing.
Qualities Most Admired In Others: I like people who are trying to help people, if they can. Friendly. Because it's not necessary to be arrogant in any situation. You just have to be friendly to people, if you can. Do good things for other people as well.
