Juan Martin del Potro had Pope Francis with him in the operating room this past Monday - in the form of a photo, sent by his fellow Argentine.

In the photo, His Holiness is giving an apostolic blessing to del Potro and his family. Pope Francis, whom met the Tandil-native at the Vatican shortly after his election last year, sent the photo through an emissary upon learning of del Potro’s wrist injury and impending surgery.

Del Potro had the photo with him throughout the procedure, and awoke from the anesthesia with the photo in the same place. It was seen on his chest, tucked underneath his left wrist, in a photo he posted on Facebook of himself in the recovery room alongside coach Franco Davin and Dr. Richard Berger.

Last May, del Potro called it “a dream come true” to meet Pope Francis, the first Pope from South America. He presented the Pope with a racquet used during his 2009 US Open triumph.
