The Last Time... With Sergiy Stakhovsky
by James Buddell|
Sergiy Stakhovsky, who is currently No. 91 in the Emirates ATP Rankings and a member of the ATP Player Council, reveals to ATPWorldTour.com the last time…
I cooked for myself or others
It was a LONG time ago! I cooked for my wife, but it was at least half a year back. It was pancakes.
I shared a hotel room with another player
I share a hotel room frequently with my coach. But, with a player, it was probably Davis Cup at some point last year.
I paid money to hire a tennis court or tennis balls
It happens every now and then when I train in Bratislava. Although I am a member at a club, it is sometimes difficult to find a court. So I have to hire them.
I played a practical joke on a player
The last time must have been Michael Llodra in Australia. I hid his racquets before his match. He did something to me, that’s why it was the last time! He retaliated by throwing my underwear on the roof of the transportation desk. It was a glass roof, so all my dirty laundry was in full view. It wasn't nice…
I forgot the birthday of a family member
I am quite good at remembering. My family is pretty organised and each sibling sends reminders. I have them on my phone.
Being famous helped me
I got a good deal with BMW. I was a brand ambassador in Slovakia, when I was living there. I have driven all the BMW series cars you can imagine.
I strung my own tennis racquet
I would say when I was a junior. Definitely not in the past 10 years. I get my racquet strung differently dependent on the balls or the court. It is normally 25/24 kilograms or up to a maximum of 28/27 kilograms. I use Signum Pro Gut in the mains and Signum Pro Poly in the crosses.
I lost something important
I am very organised as I have said, but I did lose a set of keys in Budapest airport a few years back. I was rushing and left them on the check-in. It was a pain to replace them, as I had a key for a safety deposit box on the chain.
I missed a flight
I am very good at catching planes at the last minute. I missed a plane in Paris in 2009 or 2010, I cannot remember which year. I have sometimes asked the driver to speed up en route to an airport, but sometimes they often stick to the rules. Not a kilometre over!
I asked someone for their autograph
That’s very easy. It was on the night of the 40th anniversary celebrations of the [Emirates] ATP Rankings in New York. There were so many great players there. I asked all of them to sign their pictures in the commemorative book.
I played a sport that might have caused me an injury
It’s pretty frequent. Football or basketball. I am pretty competitive. I like any sport that involves a ball.
I was asked if I was a tennis player
When I visited Budapest, where I live now, I went to see the Fed Cup team play. A Romanian reporter asked me if I was a tennis player. I said, ‘No’.
I had a bad hotel experience
I am not very picky. All of the hotels we have on the ATP World Tour are above decent.
I failed an exam
At university I failed my first exam in biology at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. It was sports medicine. I failed that pretty big time. I had my brother, who is an urologist, help me study for it.
