It may have been windy conditions, but World No. 9 John Isner and NBA Hall of Famer Clyde “The Glide” Drexler still managed to show off their tennis skills at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship at River Oaks Country Club in Houston.

The 6’10” defending Houston champion, Isner, and the 6’7” 10-time NBA All-Star, Drexler, took to the court to play a tie-break for fans to enjoy.

“It was awesome,” Isner said. “I’m so lucky to be able to play professional tennis and through that I am able to do cool things like this. It’s an unbelievable opportunity for me.”

Although Isner came out on top, Drexler was still able to take a couple of points off the Houston top seed. “Oh he’s a natural. You can tell just in general he’s an athlete. He can do it all,” said Isner.

As an avid basketball fan and a former high school player himself, Isner was pleased to play with one of his NBA favourites. “This is a guy that I looked up to when I was growing up,” said the American.

Drexler, a keen tennis fan and frequent player, was a member of the 1995 NBA Champion Houston Rockets. He also played on two Final Four teams at the University of Houston.

Speaking about Isner, who returned to the Top 10 after a run to the BNP Paribas Open semi-finals last month (l. to Djokovic), Drexler commented, “He’s getting better and better each and every year and he’s already the No. 1 American. So we look forward to watching him for many, many years. Hopefully one day he will be No. 1 in the world.”
