Lukas Rosol opened his title defence at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest on Tuesday with a 6-1, 7-6(6) victory over Filippo Volandri. The Czech won his first ATP World Tour title in Bucharest last year (d. Garcia-Lopez) and made a successful return as he won 70 per cent of his service points and broke Volandri three times.
Second seed Mikhail Youzhny will open his campaign against Robin Haase after the Dutchman defeated Australia’s Matthew Ebden 6-4, 6-3 in 84 minutes.
World No. 61 Carlos Berlocq recorded his fourth win of the season as he upset sixth seed Andreas Seppi 6-0, 2-6, 7-6(4). The Argentine converted six of his 19 break point chances as he beat Seppi for the second time this season in two hours and 31 minutes.
Seppi was not the only seed to tumble in the first round. Qualifier Paul-Henri Mathieu upset fellow Frenchman and seventh seed Nicolas Mahut 6-3, 6-1 in 85 minutes, while World No. 118 Adrian Ungur came from a set down to beat fifth seed Vasek Pospisil 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 in just under two hours. The 23-year-old Pospisil suffered his fourth successive opening-round tour-level defeat.
Home favourite Victor Hanescu, who finished runner-up here in 2007 (l. to Simon), defeated Dudi Sela 6-3, 6-4 to open his campaign. The 32 year old is coming off a quarter-final showing in Casablanca and improved to a 7-9 match record in 2014.
