Tursunov Visits Local Winery Ahead Of Portugal Open
by ATP Staff|
On Saturday afternoon, ahead of the Portugal Open, former World No. 20 and seven-time ATP World Tour titlist Dmitry Tursunov enjoyed a visit to Casal da Manteiga, a local winery in Oeiras. Tursunov was accompanied by WTA star Samantha Stosur.
“I had never been to a winery," said Tursunov. "I’ve been to Napa Valley, which is a wine region in the U.S., but I’ve never gone into a winery itself. It was pretty fascinating to see hundred year-old barrels that are still being used today. Apparently it’s a lot more than just putting alcohol into a bottle, it’s quite a long process and apparently a lot of wineries use different processes so I find it very interesting.”
During the visit, they had the opportunity to learn about the wine production process and got invited to taste a few of the wines the winery produces.
“They don’t use their feet to separate the juice from the grapes," added Tursunov, regarding the most interesting thing he learned during the visit. "Also, that you can’t drink it for the first five years. You have to keep it in a barrel and apparently the choices of wood enhance the flavors. It’s all very interesting.”
The fifth seed seed will open his Portugal Open campaign against local wild card Rui Machado in the first round. He is making his third appearance in Oeiras, having reached the second round in both 2006 and 2007.
“I would love to do well," said the Russian veteran. "I never show up at a tournament not expecting myself to do well. But just like in anything else, you have a general goal and you want to take small steps towards that goal. Every match that I play I have to make sure I come out and try my hardest, try to do the things necessary to win the match and not focus too much on being in the finals. By doing that you are really not concentrating on what’s necessary to win the match at hand.”
