Klizan Upsets Youzhny; Istomin Battles Hard In Munich
by ATP Staff|
Klizan, who is currently No. 111 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, hit 10 aces to defeat No. 15-ranked Youzhny 6-7(5), 6-2, 7-6(2) in two hours and 50 minutes in the second round.
Youzhny beat Marin Cilic in the 2010 final. He also finished runner-up in 2007 (l. to Kohlschreiber) and 2009 (l. to Berdych). Former champions Nikolay Davydenko (2004, 2011) and Philipp Kohlschreiber (2007, 2012) lost their first round matches earlier in the week.
Klizan goes on to meet Denis Istomin, who came through yet another test.
The World No. 55 defeated Marinko Matosevic 6-7(6), 6-3, 7-5 for a place in his fourth ATP World Tour quarter-final of the season. On Tuesday, he beat fifth seed Kohlschreiber in three sets.
"I am so happy to win two rounds, especially on clay," Istomin told ATPWorldTour.com. "I like to play on clay, but it is not my favourite surface. It was a good comeback today. I will just try and do my best in the quarter-finals. It is already a good tournament for me."
Qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff beat Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3, 6-3 in 73 minutes. Struff had won their previous clash in 2013, at the SkiStar Swedish Open, by the same scoreline. He awaits the winner of the battle between Austrian Jurgen Melzer and lucky loser Ricardas Berankis. Their match was suspended due to darkness at 2-all in the third set and will resume on Thursday.
