Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic picked up their 27th tour-level team title on Sunday, when they captured the Internazionali BNL d'Italia doubles title for a second time (also 2009).

The sixth seeds defeated Robin Haase and Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 7-6(2) in 85 minutes in the Rome final. It was the pair’s second straight ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown, having lifted the Mutua Madrid Open trophy (d. Bryans) seven days ago.

“It’s always nice to go back-to-back,” said Nestor. “I think the way we have been winning, we have shown a lot of resilience and we have dealt with situations that arise in matches. I think it is good going into a Grand Slam and if we keep that up at Roland Garros – because nothing is easy – and are mentally tough as we are now, we will give ourselves a chance to win.”

Nestor, who also won the Rome title with Mark Knowles in 1997 and 2006, improved to an 85-55 record in doubles titles matches. Zimonjic, also a titlist with Fabrice Santoro at the Foro Italico in 2007, is now 52-33 in finals.

Nestor and Zimonjic split €170,000 in prize money and earned 1000 Emirates ATP Doubles Rankings points by winning their third ATP World Tour title of the season (3-2 team record in 2014 finals). The pair is No. 2 in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings, behind Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan.

Nestor and Zimonjic came from behind in both sets – recovering from 1-3 in the first and 0-2 in the second.

“We were down in both sets and played some great games to get back in the match,” said Zimonjic. “The whole week was completely different to Madrid, where we started really well and did not lose a set. We had a tough draw this week, with really good opponents, but found a way to win. We saved a match point in the first match (d. Anderson-Melzer) and match point in the semi-finals (d. Bryans). It was very, very difficult.”

Said Nestor, “We will continue training next week and adjust to the different scoring. We’ll enjoy this win for a day, then get as a ready as possible for Roland Garros.”

Haase and Lopez, who did not drop a set en route to the final, shared €83,240 and earned 600 points.
