ROLAND GARROS 2014
Llodra/Mahut Avoid Seeds Exodus
by ATP Staff|
The fifth-seeded Frenchmen made their way safely through to the third round with a 7-6(2), 6-4 win over the in-form pairing of Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky, winners of clay-court titles in Oeiras and Dusseldorf this past month.
Llodra and Mahut, who came up just short against the Bryans in last year’s final, will face No. 11 seeds Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin for a place in the quarter-finals. Their countrymen rallied for a 1-6, 7-5, 6-0 win over Alejandro Falla and Marinko Matosevic.
Jamie Murray and John Peers, the No. 15 seeds, were the only other seeded tandem to advance Friday as they beat Italians Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-3. The British-Australian duo, who won the clay-court title in Munich at the start of May, will next play top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan.
The other seeds in action tumbled out. Second seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares, semi-finalists last year in Paris, fell to the German-Dutch tandem of Andre Begemann and Robin Haase 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Fourth seeds and reigning Barclays ATP World Tour Finals champions David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco lost to Andrey Golubev and Samuel Groth 7-6(7), 6-4, while seventh seeds Treat Huey and Dominic Inglot were edged out by Mate Pavic and Andre Sa 7-6(5), 7-6(6).
