Roger Federer will play singles and doubles at the Gerry Weber Open this week.

Federer, a six-time singles champion in Halle, was welcomed back to the ATP World Tour 250 event on Saturday with a big cream cake by tournament director Ralf Weber.

Federer has a 45-3 record in Halle, but faces a challenge if he is to lift his 79th tour-level crown.

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, No. 9-ranked Milos Raonic and No. 10 Kei Nishikori will also be competing alongside former titlists from Germany, Tommy Haas (2009 and 2012) and Philipp Kohlschreiber (2011).

Federer will play either wild card Jan-Lennard Struff or Joao Sousa in the second round. He partners fellow Swiss Marco Chiudinelli in the doubles against Martin Emmrich and Andreas Seppi.

Federer lost to Ernests Gulbis in the Roland Garros fourth round earlier this week.
